How this site is built to be usable.
This states what has actually been done and what is known to be missing. An accessibility statement that only lists intentions is not much use to the person who needs it.
The standard we build to.
This site is built to target WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That is a target rather than a claim of conformance: no independent audit has been carried out and the site has not been tested end to end with screen readers, so we describe what has been done instead of certifying a result.
What has been done.
Specific and checkable, so you can verify any of it:
- Semantic HTML throughout: real headings in order, lists as lists, and a description list for questions and answers rather than styled paragraphs
- Every interactive element reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus style
- Text contrast checked against AA, including a site-wide correction where orange text on white fell short and needed a darker tone
- Motion respects prefers-reduced-motion: animated diagrams settle into their final state rather than looping, and scroll-driven movement is disabled
- Diagrams that repeat what the adjacent copy already says are hidden from assistive technology instead of being announced twice
- Forms use real labels, correct autocomplete tokens, error messages tied to their field, and an error summary that receives focus
- The map on the contact page is not loaded until requested, and the address is available as text either way
- The site works without JavaScript for reading, and forms degrade to a normal POST
- Typography scales with the browser's own text size, and no monospace or condensed faces are used for body copy
What is known to be incomplete.
A statement without this section is not honest. These are the gaps we know about:
- No independent accessibility audit has been carried out
- No systematic testing with screen readers (NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver) has been done
- Complex diagrams convey their argument through adjacent text rather than through a long description of their own
- PDFs and documents linked from the blog archive predate this site and have not been checked
- The blog archive was migrated from the previous site; its images carry the alternative text they came with, which varies in quality
